The Company

Spensa Technologies Inc is a start-up company housed in the Purdue Research Park. The company was founded in 2009 by Dr. Johnny Park.

Spensa's mission is to design, develop and deliver novel technologies for the agricultural industry that will reduce reliance on manual labor, foster eco-friendly farming, and enhance crop production efficiency. Our technologies leverage our world-leading expertise in wireless sensor networks, robotics and computer vision.

Spensa is capitalized through private funding and grants from the USDA Specialty Crop Research Initiative, Washington Tree Fruit Research Commision, State Horticultural Association of Pennsylvania, and Purdue Research Foundation.

 

The Team

Dr. Johnny Park, President and CEO

Johnny founded Spensa in 2009 in recognition of the need in the agricultural industry for increased production efficiency. He is also a Research Assistant Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University where he has been leading several research projects funded by various industry and government agencies, with over $5 million research funds raised in the last 5 years. He is interested in various topics in distributed sensor networks, computer graphics, computer vision, and robotics. Johnny received his BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees all from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University.

 

Dr. Henry Medeiros, Chief Technology Officer

Henry joined Spensa in 2010 after receiving his Ph.D from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. At Purdue, his research focused on collaborative processing in wireless sensor networks and on signal processing algorithms for advanced embedded architectures. Henry received his B.E. and an M.S. degrees from the Federal University of Technology of Parana, Brazil. He has over ten years of research and development experience in the areas of embedded systems, signal processing, and wireless sensor networks.

 

Kim Nicholson, VP of Business Development

Kim has over 25 years in the agribusiness and specialty chemical industries. Kim recently served as President of the Consumer Products division of Chemtura where she managed the global enterprise consisting of 900 employees in North America, Europe, South Africa and Australia/New Zealand with 5 dedicated manufacturing facilities. Before joining Chemtura she held the position of VP of Sales and Marketing of Nutra-Park, Inc., a biotech firm specializing in plant growth regulators. Prior to Nutra-Park, Inc. Kim served as Director of Global Supply Chain for BASF where she managed project groups in Europe and the Americas. She joined BASF as National Sales Manager for the US crop protection division. Kim began her agribusiness career with American Cyanamid’s crop protection division where she held a number of sales and marketing roles.

 

Tom Puterbaugh, VP of Products

Tom has over 30 years of experience in managing new product introductions across multiple markets worldwide for Caterpillar Inc. Tom brings an ability to help lead teams in the planning, organizing, and executing of new products from concept to production. He also brings a strong focus on understanding to meet and exceed customer needs. Tom joined Spensa in June 2012, and has degrees in Management from Purdue University and Indiana Wesleyan University.

 

Anderson Nascimento, Jr., Embedded Systems Engineer

In the quest of fulfilling his dream of building autonomous robots for world domination, Anderson joined Spensa in 2010. For now, he is focusing on embedded systems design and programming. Anderson received his BS degree in Computer Engineering from Purdue University.
